Anghiari, Medieval hilltop commune in Valtiberina Valley, Tuscany, Italy.
Anghiari is a medieval town perched at about 429 meters elevation, surrounded by sturdy stone walls built in the 13th century. The settlement overlooks the Tiber valley with narrow lanes, stone buildings, and vantage points across the surrounding landscape.
The settlement developed as a fortified outpost along the border between Florence and rival powers, gaining prominence after a decisive battle in 1440. This victory later inspired artists including Leonardo da Vinci to commemorate the event in their works.
The town hosts a lively arts community where painters and craftspeople work in studios throughout the old quarters. Local galleries display contemporary and traditional works that reflect the area's creative spirit.
The best time to visit is during daylight when the lanes are active and views are clear. Comfortable shoes are essential since the pathways are steep and cobblestone, with hilly terrain throughout.
The town was the site of an important battle, yet many visitors overlook the modest memorials that mark this historical episode. Instead, the quiet lanes and outlook points at the town's edge tend to capture most attention.
