Altomonte

Altomonte is a town in Cosenza Province located in the Calabria region of southern Italy. It features medieval stone buildings arranged closely together along narrow, winding streets that follow the hillside terrain.

The settlement was established during Norman rule in the 12th century as a fortified position on a strategically advantageous hilltop. Over subsequent centuries it was repeatedly modified by different rulers, each leaving architectural marks that shaped its current appearance.

The Church of Madonna della Consolazione dominates the townscape with its Gothic architecture and remains a spiritual focal point for residents. The adjacent Dominican monastery now houses the Civic Museum, demonstrating how religious buildings have served different purposes across time.

The town is best explored on foot since the narrow streets are barely suitable for vehicles. Accommodations and dining options are scattered throughout the settlement, offering visitors a chance to experience the local way of life.

The municipality encompasses an area of about 65 square kilometers, making it a sprawling administrative territory for its small resident population. This expansive land includes forests and farmland surrounding the village core, which sustains the local economy.
