Anversa degli Abruzzi

Anversa degli Abruzzi, Italian comune

Anversa degli Abruzzi is a small commune in the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo region, built on a rocky hill 660 meters high. The village consists of old stone houses arranged around the ruins of a 12th century Norman castle, of which a watchtower still stands, and sits nestled within the steep cliffs of Gole del Sagittario with its clear streams.

The village was founded by Normans in the 12th century and named after Antwerp, reflecting early trade routes. The castle was heavily damaged in a 1706 earthquake, but the community later gained cultural significance through its connection to writer Gabriele d'Annunzio, who immortalized it in his literary work.

The name comes from Antwerp, reflecting ancient trade connections. Local people use the narrow streets and small squares for daily gatherings, and they keep traditions alive through small festivals where they share food and stories with neighbors.

The village is best reached by car, as roads wind through scenic countryside and public transport is limited. Visitors will find simple accommodations like guesthouses, and nearby lakes and hiking trails allow easy day trips into the surrounding mountain landscape.

The village is known as the setting for Gabriele d'Annunzio's work 'La Fiaccola sotto il moggio' and belongs to the 'Parchi Letterari' network celebrating literary places. This makes it a special destination for literature enthusiasts who want to explore the locations that inspired an important Italian author.
