Giardino Botanico Gole del Sagittario, Botanical garden at Riserva Naturale Gole del Sagittario in Anversa degli Abruzzi, Italy
Giardino Botanico Gole del Sagittario is a botanical garden located at the entrance of the Sagittario Gorge Nature Reserve, where roughly 380 plant species native to the region grow. The garden features educational stations positioned along the pathways to help visitors understand the local vegetation.
The nature reserve was established in 1999 through a partnership between the municipality of Anversa degli Abruzzi and the World Wide Fund for Nature. This collaboration aimed to protect the region's native plants and make them accessible to the public.
The garden forms part of a literary park inspired by Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio and hosts performances with actors throughout the year. Visitors can experience these events among the plants, blending nature and literature in one space.
The visit starts from a walking path that begins at the town cemetery and leads through a three-hour circular route combining the garden and gorge areas. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the educational stations without rushing.
The garden houses a specialized propagation nursery and seed bank that preserves rare local species for future generations. An herbarium on site supports research work and allows scientists to catalog the region's plant diversity.
