Milonia

Milonia is an archaeological site with remnants of defensive walls and a central cylindrical tower positioned strategically on a mountain pass. The structure takes advantage of its elevated location to control passage between two valleys.

The site was originally a settlement of Italic peoples before later falling under control of various noble families. This layering of occupations shaped the architectural features visible today.

The structures here bear the marks of different ruling families who controlled the territory over time.

The site sits on elevated ground and is accessed through a northern entrance that leads to the tower. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended since the terrain is uneven and slopes uphill.

The location sits at a natural crossroads between the Fucino plateau to the east and the Sagittario valley in the Abruzzi region. This geographic position explains why a fortified settlement emerged here.
