Piccolomini Tower

The Piccolomini Tower is a medieval fortification in Pescina with thick stone walls, narrow defensive windows, and a rectangular footprint. The structure rises high above the town and still defines the skyline of the place today.

The tower was built in the 13th century as part of military defenses in a region often contested between rival powers. The structure remained under the control of the Piccolomini family and their heirs for generations.

The tower bears the name of the Piccolomini family, who ruled this area for centuries and held power over the surrounding valleys. Today visitors can see old objects and documents inside that show how life looked in a medieval fortress town.

The tower is located in the center of Pescina and is easy to reach on foot. Most times of year offer pleasant conditions for visiting and exploring the surroundings.

The tower is one of the few structures that survived the 1915 earthquake that devastated the entire Marsica region. This resilience makes it a rare example of medieval building techniques in a seismically active zone.
