Museo tecnologico di Telespazio, museo tecnologico
The Museo tecnologico di Telespazio is a technology museum inside the Fucino space center in Ortucchio that displays old equipment and machines used for satellite transmission. The site holds teleprinters, batteries, antennas, control panels, and a section of the historic ship Elettra complete with propeller and rudder.
The museum was created in 1968 but opened to the public only in 1986. Its collection centers on testing with mobile stations from the early 1960s that transmitted antenna signals between Italy and the United States using the Relay and Telstar satellites.
The museum displays equipment from when satellite connections were new and people first used them to share signals across countries. The machines on display tell the story of Italy's role in connecting radio and television stations over vast distances.
Visitors should contact the museum ahead of time since it opens by appointment and guided tours are offered. Entry is free, and the location is easy to access as it sits within the Fucino space center on the flat plains of the region.
The museum preserves a section of the ship Elettra that Guglielmo Marconi used in the 1920s and 1930s for shortwave radio experiments. The vessel served as a floating laboratory and demonstrated groundbreaking work in wireless communication before satellites were invented.
