Trevico, Italian comune
Trevico is a small village perched high in the mountains of Avellino province, Campania, over 1000 meters above sea level. The settlement spreads across the mountain slope with narrow lanes and old stone houses, centered around the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and dominated by castle ruins at the highest point.
Trevico traces its roots to the Lombard period and was mentioned by the poet Horace in ancient times. The settlement served as a center of the medieval Barony of Vico and passed through various rulers including Lombards, Normans, and later the Bourbons.
The name Trevico traces back to Lombard times. Residents live at a slow pace tied to the seasons and local festivals, with celebrations for Saint Vitus and Saint Euplius still shaping community life today.
The village is easily reached by car, with the Vallata highway exit serving as the nearest access point. Visitors should bring warm clothing due to the high elevation, which brings cold winds and snow in winter months.
Filmmaker Ettore Scola, one of Italy's renowned directors, was born here, and his childhood home now serves as a small museum dedicated to his cinematic work. The Porta Alba archway, built from lava stone in the late 1500s, stands as the historic gateway into the village.
