Zungoli

Zungoli is a small town built on a tuff hill at 657 meters elevation in Avellino province. Narrow cobbled streets and stone staircases wind their way through the buildings that line the ridgeline.

The settlement originated around 900 AD, with archaeological evidence of Roman occupation including coins and stones near the ancient Via Herculea trade route. This road was a significant pathway connecting regions in antiquity.

The town holds recognition as part of I Borghi più belli d'Italia and received the Bandiera arancione certification from the Italian Touring Club.

The town is best explored on foot since vehicles cannot easily navigate the steep narrow passages throughout the settlement. Wearing flat shoes and arriving early in the day helps make the experience more comfortable and less crowded.

The territory includes the Pescasseroli-Candela tratturo, an ancient driving route that follows the Apennine watershed ridge line. Local hikers value this path for its historical importance and the views it provides across the highlands.
