Canelli

Canelli is a wine town in the Province of Asti situated along the Belbo River valley, where vineyards with Moscato grapes cover the surrounding hills. The town is home to historic winery houses such as Bosca, Coppo, Contratto, and Gancia that welcome visitors to explore their operations.

The town grew from prehistoric Ligurian settlements and became a significant Roman center before joining the Republic of Asti in 1235. In the 1800s the area gained renown as Italy's sparkling wine production hub.

The underground cellars carved beneath medieval streets shape how locals and visitors alike understand this place as a wine community. These chambers have become symbols of collective labor and family pride in winemaking heritage.

The major winery houses offer guided tours where you can see the underground tunnels and taste local wines paired with meals. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is advisable since the cellar paths can be uneven or slippery.

Beneath the town run approximately 20 kilometers of tunnel cellars storing millions of wine bottles that extend under the medieval downtown streets. This underground network is remarkable in scale compared to other European wine towns.
