Circello, Administrative division in Campania, Italy
Circello is a municipality in the Province of Benevento in the southern Italian region of Campania. Located approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Naples at an elevation of 700 meters, it sits within the rolling terrain of the southern Apennines.
The territory was originally the Samnite city of Taurasia before Roman conquest during the Samnite Wars. This shift placed the region under Roman rule and reorganized its administrative structures.
The town holds a Norman castle from the 11th century and the Annunciation Church, with Saint Michael the Archangel as its patron saint. These landmarks shape the local identity and spiritual traditions.
The region experiences cold winters with extended periods of snow and mild summer temperatures. Visitors should prepare for higher elevations and seasonal weather variations, particularly during the colder months.
Archaeological excavations uncovered the Tabula Alimentaria Ligurum Baebianorum from 101 AD, a document listing landowners of the era. This inscription reveals a Roman program that provided financial support to children through imperial resources.
