Carinola, Medieval municipality in Province of Caserta, Italy

Carinola is a commune located in the Province of Caserta between Naples and Rome in southern Italy. The settlement spreads across several residential neighborhoods including San Ruosi, Ventaroli, San Donato, and Casale di Carinola, each forming a distinct part of the municipality.

The settlement was founded by the Pelasgi as Urbana and later suffered destruction during invasions by the Vandals in the 5th century and by Saracen raids around 750 AD. These repeated attacks show how the location was strategically important and contested over centuries.

The settlement consists of several distinct neighborhoods, each maintaining its own local parish that serves as a gathering point for residents. These separate communities give the place a fragmented character where people identify more with their own quarter than with the municipality as a whole.

The municipality provides basic administrative services through its town hall located at Piazza O. Mazza where visitors can ask for information or directions. It's best to explore during daytime hours when the local shops and streets are most active and the various neighborhoods are easiest to navigate.

The municipality received a Silver Medal for Civil Merit in 2004, a recognition of the civilian suffering and sacrifices during World War II. This honor distinguishes it as a place with deep historical wounds that shaped its community.
