Riserva naturale Lago Falciano, Regional nature reserve in Falciano del Massico, Italy.
Riserva naturale Lago Falciano is a wetland reserve of about 90 hectares surrounding a lake at the base of Mount Massico in Caserta province. The water is ringed by reed beds and marshy land that provide numerous niches for wildlife.
The Bourbon government began drainage work at Lago Falciano in 1839, altering the original ecosystem. After World War II, further changes followed to the shoreline and water management of the lake.
The area provides habitat for reed warblers, herons, and other water birds visible among the reeds and around the water. The way visitors come to watch and listen to birds here shows how meaningful this place is to people interested in nature.
The lake is best reached on foot, with sturdy footwear recommended for the damp paths. Visit during dry weather when the ground is less slippery and wildlife is more active.
Work to improve the water in the 1970s led to sand buildup and pollution rather than the hoped-for improvement. This example shows how difficult it can be to restore ecosystems after they have been damaged.
