Cathedral of St. Clement

The Cathedral of St. Clement is a medieval church in Teano with a central nave, two side aisles, and columns that were taken from ancient Roman buildings. The interior follows a classical layout that was typical of basilica designs during that period.

Construction began in 1050 and took about 60 years to complete, establishing a new diocese for the city and surrounding region. This founding was a major turning point for the church's administration of the area.

The cathedral serves as a gathering place for the local community during religious celebrations and contains medieval artistic works that reflect the area's spiritual traditions. These artworks show the craftsmanship of their era and remain central to the space today.

The building is located in town and can be reached on foot from the railway station when arriving. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since there is much to explore inside and stairs lead down to underground areas.

Two red granite sphinxes from an ancient non-Christian temple stand at the entrance area, giving the place an unexpected layer of history. In the underground vault rests a Roman sarcophagus that shows how old and new religious traditions coexisted in the same location.
