Rubiera, Italian comune
Rubiera is a small commune located in the Province of Reggio Emilia in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. It sits along the historic Via Emilia trade route and features arcaded buildings with covered porticoes, several churches dating from the 10th to 18th centuries, and historic structures like Palazzo Sacrati and the Herberia Theatre.
Rubiera was an important Roman crossing point where emperors Gallienus and Valerianus built a bridge over the Secchia River in 259 AD. In medieval times, especially from the 12th century, it became fortified with a castle and changed hands among various ruling families including the House of Canossa, the House of Este, and the Church.
The name Rubiera comes from the original name Corte de Herberia, which likely means 'middle of the plain' and points to Celtic roots. The covered porticoes in the town center are used daily by residents as meeting places and sheltered walkways.
The town is easily accessible from Reggio Emilia by car along Via Emilia, by regional train, or by local bus. Its compact size makes exploring on foot or by bike comfortable, allowing visitors to see the main sites without extensive planning or lengthy travel between locations.
Rubiera is the hometown of Stefano Baldini, an Olympic marathon runner who achieved great success in his sport and became a source of pride for the town. Additionally, the town has hosted a successful handball team playing in Italy's top league since 1982, showing that small communities can nurture competitive sports.
