Neumarkt, Municipality in South Tyrol, Italy
Neumarkt is a municipality in South Tyrol situated at the foot of Castelfeder hill, positioned along an important valley route. Its center still shows features of its medieval layout with arcaded buildings and older structures.
The settlement originated as a Roman village called Endidae on the Claudia Augusta road, a crucial north-south trade route. During the Middle Ages, it developed into a trading hub that benefited from its convenient location.
The name refers to its medieval market square, where traders gathered to exchange goods. You can still sense this mixed heritage in the streets and shops today, reflecting the bilingual character of the valley.
The municipality spreads across several villages and is best explored on foot, with the older centers easily reachable. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the streets are uneven and the terrain slopes in different directions.
Castelfeder Castle perches on the nearby hill and now houses an archaeological museum containing finds from various periods. This museum displays layers of the past from the Iron Age through Roman times.
