Latemar, Alpine mountain group in South Tyrol, Italy
Latemar is a mountain group in South Tyrol containing 31 distinct peaks, with Cimon del Latemar reaching 2842 meters at its highest point. The range consists of limestone and dolomite rock traversed by marked trails that guide visitors through its varied terrain.
The name Latemar comes from the Ladin word Lactemara, first recorded in the 12th century, referring to the mountain range above a glacial lake basin. The formation itself developed over millions of years through erosion and geological forces that shaped its distinctive features.
The mountain group stands in the Ladin-speaking region of South Tyrol, where local communities have long connected their identity with these peaks. The trails and huts reflect how people here have organized their relationship with the mountains over time.
Mountain huts and refuges scattered throughout the area offer shelter and rest stops for hikers exploring the trails. In winter, the Carezza and Latemar ski centers provide access to slopes and additional facilities for seasonal visitors.
The limestone and dolomite rocks display different color variations throughout the day, shifting from bright white to deep gray tones. This changing palette is caused by the sun's position and creates different visual impressions depending on the time of day and weather conditions.
