Description
San Matteo di Rialto was a church building in Venice located near the busy Rialto Bridge in the San Polo district. The structure stood on a central plaza surrounded by market stalls and commercial activity.
History
The church was founded in 1156 when the Patriarch of Grado received a land donation from Leonardo Coronario. It underwent major rebuilding in the 1600s and 1700s before being demolished in 1818.
Culture
The church was closely tied to the butchers and traders of the neighborhood, who formed the core of its congregation. This working community gave the place its practical character and social role in daily commercial life.
Practical
This location no longer exists today as the church was demolished long ago and remains only in historical records. Visitors can explore the area where the building once stood, near the Rialto marketplace.
