San Giovanni Elemosinario, Renaissance church in Rialto district, Venice, Italy.
San Giovanni Elemosinario is a Renaissance church in Venice's Rialto district, constructed of brick with a symmetrical floor plan. The building displays clean architectural lines and a compact design suited to its location in a busy commercial area.
A church stood on this site from the 11th century until a major fire swept through Rialto in 1514 and destroyed it. Architect Antonio Abbondi designed the current Renaissance structure as a replacement, which has survived to the present day.
The church is dedicated to Saint John the Almsgiver, a figure honored for generosity toward those in need. The name reflects values that were central to the local trading community that gathered nearby.
The church sits nestled among market stalls at Rialto, making it easy to visit while exploring the trading area on foot. Plan to combine a visit with time to wander the nearby market squares and streets where most of the action happens.
Inside the modest brick church lies an altarpiece by Titian and painted ceiling work that contrasts sharply with the ordinary exterior hidden among market stalls. Few visitors realize that this tucked-away space holds some of the artistic treasures most travelers miss in Venice.
