Chianciano Terme

Chianciano Terme is a thermal spa resort in Tuscany made up of two very different areas. The old town sits on a hilltop with medieval buildings, while the modern spa facilities with multiple pools and treatment centers spread across the valley below.

The springs attracted Romans who built luxurious bathhouses and villas around the thermal waters. The hilltop settlement grew into a medieval town, and the springs were later developed into a modern resort during the 1800s and 1900s.

The name reflects the ancient thermal springs that have drawn people for centuries. Visitors notice today how the entire town is organized around these mineral waters and their role in local daily life.

The different thermal parks offer various types of mineral water, each suited to different types of treatments. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk around the hilltop town, as the pathways are steep in places.

The town appeared in Federico Fellini's classic film "8½" and hosts an annual award ceremony bearing his name. This film connection draws cinema lovers who come to see the locations featured in the famous director's work.
