Castelluccio

Castelluccio is a castle sitting on a hilltop near Pienza with two round defensive towers built in traditional brick. The structure displays classic features of a medieval fortress with solid walls and fortified design.

The Republic of Siena acquired this castle in 1320 and reinforced its defensive structures with towers and a military garrison. Its location near the Papal States made it strategically important for regional control.

The chapel inside honors San Bernardino da Siena, a religious preacher who stayed here and left his mark on the place during his travels through the region.

The castle is privately owned, which limits access to the interior, but the exterior walls and towers are visible from outside year-round. Visitors can walk around the perimeter and observe the fortified design from various angles.

The castle carries the story of Countess Giulia Maria di Montefiore, who plotted a revenge scheme and was executed in the courtyard as punishment. This dark chapter became part of the place's long memory.
