Madonna della Rosa

Madonna della Rosa is a Renaissance church in Chianciano Terme with a Greek cross floor plan, a semicircular apse, and travertine marble details set against brick walls. Pillars and windows structure the interior space and shape how light fills the chapel.

The present structure was built between 1585 and 1599, replacing an earlier building from 1346 known as Santa Maria in Carcere or delle Nevi. This reconstruction responded to Renaissance architectural tastes of the period.

Inside, a fresco shows the Madonna offering a white rose to the Christ Child, flanked by Saint John the Baptist and Saint Bartholomew. This image reflects local devotional traditions and shapes how visitors experience the sacred space.

The church is generally open to visitors and located in the town center of Chianciano Terme, making it easy to reach on foot. It is worth checking opening hours in advance, as they may vary depending on the season.

The interior features a trompe-l'oeil dome designed by Leonardo De Vegni in 1766, structured by eight pairs of pillars that frame saint statues and windows. This optical illusion creates the impression of greater height, making the space feel more expansive.
