The San Francesco Church features a brick construction with a single hall and truss roof, complemented by three presbyteral chapels at its eastern end.
The Franciscan congregation established their presence in Lucca in 1228, leading to the church construction that was completed in the early 15th century.
The church contains the tomb of composer Luigi Boccherini, whose remains were repatriated to Italy in 1927 under Mussolini's administration.
The church stands in its namesake square in central Lucca, with a white limestone facade added during 20th-century renovations.
Following state expropriation in the 19th century, numerous paintings from the church were transferred to Lucca's municipal museum collection.
