Porta dei Borghi

The gate features two gray sandstone towers decorated with white limestone and a central opening covered by a round eight-meter-high arch.

Built between 1198 and 1265, Porta dei Borghi remains one of the original four gateways from the thirteenth-century circle of walls in Lucca.

The entrance displays a restored fresco depicting Madonna with Child in a lunette, representing the connection between religious art and civic architecture.

The gate marks the northern end of Via Fillungo and stands near Porta Santa Maria, which became the main city entrance in the sixteenth century.

The towers and upper section of this medieval gate now function as private residences, integrating historical architecture with modern living spaces.
