Church of San Francesco

Church of San Francesco is a Romanesque building in brick with a single-nave hall and timber roof, ending with three chapels at the eastern side. Its white limestone facade was added during 20th-century renovations.

Franciscans established their presence in Lucca in 1228, leading to construction of the church that was completed in the early 15th century. The building was later subjected to state expropriation and underwent various changes.

The church contains the tomb of composer Luigi Boccherini, whose remains were repatriated to Italy in 1927 under Mussolini's administration.
