Basilica of San Frediano, Minor basilica in Lucca, Italy

Description

The Basilica of San Frediano is a Romanesque church in Lucca with a white marble facade displaying a large golden mosaic. This mosaic depicts Christ ascending, surrounded by apostles, and forms one of the building's most striking features.

History

The origins trace back to a 6th-century church founded by Irish bishop Fridianus. The building underwent major reconstruction during the 12th century.

Culture

The baptismal area inside displays marble panels with scenes from the life of Moses, created by craftspeople across different periods. These carvings tell in stone the stories that mattered to the faithful of this city.

Practical

The building is open during regular visiting hours and welcomes all guests. Allow time to explore the interior at a relaxed pace, especially if you want to study the marble carvings and the shrine in detail.

Did you know?

In the left aisle stands a glass shrine containing the preserved body of Saint Zita, a venerated local figure. Visiting this spot is a meaningful moment for many pilgrims.
