Sant'Agostino, Lucca, Gothic church in central Lucca, Italy.
Sant'Agostino is a Gothic church in central Lucca designed with a single nave and three apse chapels. The bell tower was constructed using remnants of an ancient Roman theater, integrating different historical building periods into one structure.
The church was rebuilt in the 14th century on the foundation of an earlier San Salvatore in Mura. Major interior renovations were completed in 1664, establishing the design that visitors see today.
The interior walls display frescoes by Gemignani showing the Risen Christ alongside a Madonna with Saints Peter, Augustine, Andrew, Francis, and Nicola da Tolentino. These painted works shape the visual character of the church and tell religious stories to visitors walking through.
The church remains open to visitors year-round and sits in the historic center of Lucca, easily accessible on foot. Regular religious services take place, so checking opening times before visiting helps you choose the best moment to explore.
The bell tower's foundation contains visible sections of an ancient Roman theater, showing the continuity of building history on this site. These remains physically link the medieval church with the city's Roman past.
