Lavagna

Lavagna is a coastal town in Liguria positioned between Genoa and La Spezia, with five kilometers of sandy shoreline and a working marina for boats. The town blends beach space with nautical facilities along the regional coastline.

The settlement originated in Roman times as Lavania and became a stronghold of the Fieschi family in 1198 during conflicts within the Republic of Genoa. This connection to the powerful family shaped the town's future development.

The annual Torta dei Fieschi festival brings medieval processions and shared cake to the town, honoring a wedding tradition tied to the local noble family. The celebration shows how the community keeps old customs alive and connected to its roots.

The name Lavagna comes from slate extracted from the San Giacomo Mountains, which locals historically quarried for roof tiles. This material shaped the region's craft traditions and left marks on local building styles.
