San Severino Marche, Medieval commune in Province of Macerata, Italy

San Severino Marche is a commune in the Province of Macerata featuring a hilltop medieval center with Renaissance buildings throughout the town. The oval-shaped Piazza del Popolo serves as the heart of the community, surrounded by historic architecture.

Originally known as Septempeda, the settlement was established as a Roman colony around the 3rd century BC and became an important junction for regional trade routes. Its strategic location helped shape the area's development over centuries.

The Teatro Feronia, built in 1747 by architect Ireneo Aleandri, gives the Piazza del Popolo its cultural identity and remains an active venue for local performances and events.

The town is best explored on foot since the medieval layout with narrow streets and stairs is not suitable for vehicles. Comfortable shoes are recommended when navigating the hilly terrain and steep passages.

The hamlet of Elcito sits perched at 800 meters elevation on a cliff, home to approximately seven residents who maintain their tight-knit community in isolation. This tiny settlement shows how people choose to live in the most remote corners of the territory.
