Andora

Andora is a coastal commune in Savona Province, Liguria, with sandy beaches and gentle hills in the hinterland. The center lies along the Merula River, where a historic old town and a modern seafront stretch with bathing establishments meet.

Phoenician traders from Asia Minor founded a settlement on this coast in the 8th century BC. The Romans later built the Via Julia Augusta through the area and established a station for travelers and merchants.

The name derives from the ancient Ligurian tribe that lived here before Roman conquest. Visitors today see stone bridges and medieval ruins along the coast that bear witness to past ages.

The railway station sits close to the shore and connects the town with other Ligurian destinations. Several diving centers offer courses and trips to underwater caves and wrecks in the surrounding waters.

The area lies within the Ligurian Sea whale sanctuary, where fin whales swim close to shore from spring to autumn. Boat tours regularly depart from local harbors to observe these large marine animals.
