Aspromonte, Mountain range in Province of Reggio Calabria, Italy
Aspromonte is a mountain range in southern Calabria with peaks rising to around 2000 meters, carved by deep valleys and covered in thick Mediterranean forests. The terrain varies with elevation, creating different landscapes that are largely protected by national park status.
The mountain was the site of the Battle of Aspromonte in 1862, when Giuseppe Garibaldi and his followers were stopped during their attempt to march toward Rome. This battle was a pivotal moment in the struggle for Italian unification.
The mountain villages here keep alive Greek traditions and the Griko language passed down through families over centuries. You can see this heritage reflected in local festivals and how people in these communities connect with their past.
Visitors can walk marked trails through the national park terrain at various difficulty levels depending on their route. The area is accessible for day trips, with different sections suited to different fitness levels.
The southern slopes grow bergamot citrus fruit, used worldwide in perfumes and Earl Grey tea, making this the only place where this particular fruit thrives at commercial scale. The unique climate and soil conditions here create the ideal environment for this crop.
