Old Pforzheimer Hütte, Mountain hut and cultural heritage site in Mals, Italy.
The Old Pforzheimer Hutte is a mountain hut located at 2,256 meters (7,402 feet) near Mals in South Tyrol and sits close to the Sesvennahütte. The structure overlooks the surrounding peaks and now serves as a museum with exhibitions.
The hut was built in 1901 by the Pforzheim section of the German Alpine Club and changed ownership after South Tyrol became part of Italy. This transition marked a turning point in the refuge's history.
The building reflects mountain construction methods typical of the region and now houses an exhibition about smuggling along the border. The display allows visitors to learn about the area's past and the people who were active here.
The refuge can be reached via two hiking trails: a short path of about 4 minutes from Sesvennahütte or a longer route of about 49 minutes from La Forcella. Both options allow visitors to reach the site depending on their fitness level and available time.
Since summer 2024, the formerly used mountain refuge operates as a self-catering accommodation specifically designed for youth groups. This change in use has given the place a new purpose and opened it to a younger visitor demographic.
