La Verna, Franciscan sanctuary on Mount Penna, Chiusi della Verna, Italy
La Verna is a Franciscan sanctuary located at 1,283 meters (4,210 feet) elevation within dense forests of the Tuscan Apennines. The site consists of religious buildings spread across the mountain terrain and surrounded by walking paths through the woods.
A nobleman named Count Orlando of Chiusi della Verna gave this mountain to Saint Francis in 1213. This donation led to the establishment of one of the earliest Franciscan communities in Italy.
The basilica displays glazed terracotta works and frescoes showing scenes from Saint Francis's life across its corridors and chapels. These artworks reflect how religious devotion was expressed through skilled craftsmanship over centuries.
The sanctuary provides lodging for pilgrims and visitors, with guided tours available through the buildings and grounds. Access and comfort vary depending on the season and weather conditions at this elevation.
The protected forest at this location is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, wild boar, eagles, and owls. These animals are part of the natural setting and can be observed by visitors who walk quietly through the woods.
