Hirzer, Alpine peak in Sarntal region, Italy
Hirzer is an alpine peak in the Sarntal region reaching 2,781 meters with steep rocky paths running through dense alpine rose fields toward the summit. A cable car transports visitors from Saltaus valley station to Klammeben mountain station at 1,980 meters elevation.
Ancient shepherd paths gradually developed into the marked hiking trails we see today across the mountain. Steel cables and safety equipment were later added to challenging sections to make climbing easier and safer.
Mountain huts along the routes bring hikers together to eat South Tyrolean dishes like dumplings and sweet pancakes. This tradition of stopping to eat is deeply tied to how locals and visitors share life on the mountain.
The cable car runs mainly from May through November, though exact dates can shift based on weather and season. Bring sturdy footwear and weather protection since conditions change quickly at this elevation.
The summit offers views across four different valleys: Passeiertal, Vinschgau, Etschtal and the surrounding Dolomites. This rare vantage point lets visitors see multiple landscapes at once from a single location.
