Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi in Bitonto

The Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi features a pointed arch portal adorned with sculptures of leaves and pine cones on its late Romanesque facade.

Construction of the church began in 1283 under Sergio Bove's direction with approval from Charles of Anjou and consecration by Bishop Leucio in 1284.

The church houses sixteenth-century altars, late medieval sculptures in the presbytery, and an eighteenth-century sacristy with period furniture.

The church stands at the edge of Bitonto's city center on Piazza Minerva, where the former episcopal seminary now functions as the diocesan museum.

During the Battle of Bitonto in 1734, the adjacent monastery served as a hospital before its closure in 1809 by decree of Joachim Murat.
