Santi Medici, Minor basilica in Bitonto, Italy.
Santi Medici is a modern basilica in Bitonto featuring a Latin cross design with a nave extending roughly 60 meters and a transept spanning approximately 20 meters across. Contemporary architectural details are woven throughout the interior to create an open, light-filled worship space.
Construction began in 1960 and took 13 years before Bishop Aurelio Marena consecrated the building in 1973. This timing reflected the community's need for a larger place of worship as the number of worshippers grew.
The basilica houses the relics of Saints Cosmas and Damian, which were moved here from an earlier church to serve more worshippers. These holy remains draw people who seek the intercession of these venerated saints.
The basilica operates a hospice service providing care for seriously ill patients in partnership with the local health system. Visitors should be respectful of ongoing activities and the sacred purpose of the space during their visit.
A pipe organ built in 1971 by the renowned Padua-based maker Ruffatti occupies the counter-facade choir loft and features 60 registers across three manuals and pedals. Music enthusiasts recognize it as a fine example of organ craftsmanship from that era.
