Abbazia di Santa Maria della Sambucina

Abbazia di Santa Maria della Sambucina is a Romanesque abbey set in the hills of Luzzi featuring a basilica layout with stone vaulted ceilings and arched openings. The structure displays multiple architectural phases resulting from centuries of modifications and additions.

Founded in 1087 by Benedictine monks, the abbey transitioned to Cistercian order in 1141 bringing new spiritual practices and management approaches. This shift fundamentally altered how the community organized its religious and economic activities.

The abbey served as a hub for craftsmanship, where monks engaged in silk weaving, wool working, and ceramics production that shaped the region's economy for centuries.
