The Santa Maria della Sambucina Abbey stands at 848 meters above sea level, featuring a Latin cross layout with three naves and five bays.
Founded in 1087 by Benedictine monks led by Sigismondo, the abbey transferred to Cistercian control in 1141 through Count Goffredo di Loritello.
The monastery maintained a calligraphic school specializing in manuscript copying and developed techniques for silk, wool, terracotta, and glass production.
The abbey remains open for visits, displaying original foundation traces and architectural elements that reveal its complex construction phases.
Religious figure Joachim of Fiore entered this abbey around 1160 before becoming abbot at the Santa Maria di Corazzo Abbey.
