Portofino marine protected area

The Portofino marine protected area is a coastal reserve along the Ligurian Sea with underwater cliffs, caves, and rocky platforms rich in coral life. The zone covers several kilometers of shoreline and extends into deeper waters where various rock formations create habitats for diverse marine species.

Authorities created this protected zone in 1999 to save overfished and degraded coastal habitats along the Ligurian Sea. The initiative brought together local towns, the provincial government, and a university to monitor and restore the marine ecosystems through scientific research.
