Portofino marine protected area

The marine sanctuary extends along the Ligurian coast with underwater cliffs, caves, and rich coralligenous platforms reaching depths of 100 meters.

The Environment Department established this conservation zone in 1999, creating a consortium between Camogli, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure municipalities, Genoa Province, and Genoa University.

The marine reserve represents a primary Mediterranean research location for marine biologists studying red coral populations and underwater ecosystem preservation methods.

Visitors can participate in regulated diving activities to observe marine life, including groupers, barracudas, and extensive gorgonian populations throughout designated zones.

The underwater environment contains the largest shallow-water red coral community in the Ligurian Sea, supporting a complex ecosystem of marine species.
