San Gottardo in Corte Church

The San Gottardo in Corte features a pink terracotta bell tower with white marble columns and an octagonal apse in the Italian Gothic style.

Built in 1336 as a chapel for Azzone Visconti, the church initially honored the Virgin Mary before being dedicated to Saint Gotthard, patron of gout sufferers.

The church houses valuable artworks, including a fresco of the Crucifixion from the Giotto school and an altarpiece by Giovanni Battista Crespi depicting Saint Charles.

The church stands adjacent to the Royal Palace of Milan, with its entrance relocated to the southern side during 18th-century renovations of the palace complex.

The bell tower contained Milan's first public clock, which measured 24 hours from sunset, giving the surrounding district the name Contrada delle Ore.
