Monte Testaccio, Ancient waste dump in Rome
Monte Testaccio is an artificial mound in Rome composed almost entirely of testae, fragments of broken ancient Roman pottery.
The mound was built up over a period of one to two centuries, probably between the 1st and 2nd century AD.
It has become a cultural symbol of Rome's ancient history, attracting tourists and archaeologists alike.
Today, it is a popular spot for nightlife with many clubs and restaurants located around its base.
Unlike other ancient ruins, Monte Testaccio is made entirely from discarded material, not from buildings.
