Castel San Pietro, Medieval castle in Ton, Italy
Castel San Pietro is a medieval castle ruin perched on a rocky spur overlooking the valleys below. It features a distinctive cylindrical tower rising to about 864 meters (2,835 feet) in elevation.
The castle was built by the Thun family in the 12th century and sat along an ancient Roman trade route through the mountain passes. It fell into disuse during the 17th century and has remained abandoned ever since.
A chapel inside honors Saint Peter and displays religious artwork from the 16th century that visitors can still see today. It reflects how important this place was to people living in the valley.
The walk starts from Vigo di Ton and takes about one hour with steady uphill climbing. Sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness help, especially when weather makes the trail slippery or muddy.
The round tower shows traces of construction techniques from a much earlier Roman settlement period. This layer of history often goes unnoticed when visitors focus only on the medieval castle part.
