Castel Thun

Castel Thun is a castle and museum in Vigo di Ton that stands on a hillside overlooking the Non valley, surrounded by apple orchards and fortification walls. Its layout and preserved structures reflect the medieval architecture and design typical of noble family residences from that era.

The castle was constructed in 1250 and served as the main residence of the Thun family for several centuries. Control of the complex passed to the Autonomous Province of Trento in 1992, which opened it to the public as a museum.

The castle displays period furnishings and decorative Renaissance artwork alongside German frescoes throughout its rooms. These elements reflect how the noble family who lived here shaped their living spaces according to their tastes and the artistic trends of their time.

The castle sits on a hillside with views extending across the valley, and reaching it involves a moderate climb. Comfortable footwear is recommended, and visitors should allow adequate time to explore the rooms and halls throughout the complex.

The Spanish Door dating to 1566 displays Moorish architectural elements and functions as the entrance positioned between two former prison towers. This unexpected feature shows how cultural influences reached these Alpine regions through trade and political connections of that era.
