Church of Sant' Andrea

Sant' Andrea is a Romanesque church in Pistoia with a striking marble facade in contrasting colors, featuring intricate carved decorations and a portal created by the brothers Gruamonte and Adeodatus. Inside, visitors can see a sculptured pulpit by Giovanni Pisano and various paintings by Renaissance and later artists displayed in the side aisles.

The church originated in the 8th century but acquired its main features through extensive construction during the 12th century. These major building projects transformed its structure and gave it the Romanesque character it displays today.

The portal shows the Journey of the Magi and reflects the church's role as a stopping point for pilgrims traveling to Rome along the ancient pilgrimage route.

The pulpit carved by Giovanni Pisano in 1301 displays biblical scenes with lifelike figures and represents a turning point in sculpture between medieval and Renaissance styles.
