Republic of Rose Island, Artificial island in Adriatic Sea, Italy.
Republic of Rose Island was an artificial steel platform in the Adriatic Sea, located about 11 kilometers off the Italian coast. The structure contained a restaurant, bar, nightclub, and post office spread across a 400 square meter deck.
Engineer Giorgio Rosa built the platform in 1967 and declared it an independent nation beyond Italian territorial waters in 1968. Italian naval forces destroyed the structure with explosives in 1969, and a subsequent storm finished its demolition.
The platform issued its own currency called the Mill and produced postage stamps that visitors could purchase as souvenirs. These self-made symbols reflected how the founder wanted recognition as a legitimate nation.
The platform no longer exists, as it was destroyed in 1969 with nothing remaining to visit on site. Information about it can only be accessed through historical documents, photographs, and museum collections.
Pietro Bernardini became the sole permanent resident after surviving a shipwreck and subsequently being offered work and housing on the platform. This unusual story connected a shipwrecked survivor with an engineer's dream of building a micronation.
