Toirano Caves, Show cave system in Toirano, Italy.
The Toirano Caves form an underground system in the Ligurian Alps near the Italian Riviera, extending through multiple levels. Several connected chambers create different zones where mineral formations grow from ceilings and floors.
Prehistoric humans used the caves during the late Upper Paleolithic era, leaving traces of their presence. Cave bears once inhabited these spaces, and their remains were documented during archaeological work in the 20th century.
The Basura grotto takes its name from the old Ligurian word for witch, reflecting local legends. Visitors today can see lighting systems that highlight the geological features and make the space accessible for guided tours.
Guided tours last about 70 minutes and follow illuminated paths through the chambers. The interior temperature remains constant at around 16 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit), so warm clothing and sturdy footwear are advisable.
In the Antro di Cibele chamber, smooth round calcite formations developed underwater. These shapes resemble vegetables and fruits and differ noticeably from the usual pointed mineral deposits.
