Fischburg, Cultural heritage monument in Selva, South Tyrol.
Fischburg, also known as Castel Gardena, is a stone castle set on raised ground above the Val Gardena valley in Sëlva, South Tyrol, Italy. The building has a compact form with towers, a courtyard, and a series of rooms that have kept much of their original layout and furnishings.
The castle was built in 1621, when noble families in the region were establishing their presence in the Dolomite valleys. It later passed to the South Tyrolean Castle Institute, which now manages it and opens it to visitors.
The castle is also known as Castel Gardena, a name that reflects the Italian side of this bilingual region. Its rooms display furniture and everyday objects from past centuries that give a sense of how people lived in the Dolomite valleys.
Visits are run as guided tours organized by the South Tyrolean Castle Institute, so it is worth checking their schedule before heading out. The castle sits above the village of Sëlva, which means the approach involves a short uphill walk.
Although the outside of the castle looks like a typical 17th-century noble residence, the interior still has rooms with original wood paneling and tiled stoves that have changed very little over the centuries. This level of original detail inside an alpine castle of this size is not common.
