San Romedio Sanctuary

San Romedio Sanctuary comprises five churches and chapels arranged vertically on a steep limestone cliff, joined by stone staircases and walkways. The buildings stack upward from the base to the summit, creating a compact and striking arrangement on this high rock face.

A chapel was built over Saint Romedius's burial site and additional structures were gradually added to the cliff over time. The most recent building was completed in the early 20th century, marking the end of centuries of gradual development.

The sanctuary carries the legacy of Saint Romedius, whose name connects to the hermitic tradition that shaped this place. Visitors who come here encounter the spiritual life that locals have maintained through prayers and gatherings across the centuries.

A footpath connects the sanctuary to the nearby village and brings visitors directly to the base of the cliff. Guided tours can be arranged in advance to learn more about the individual spaces and their stories.

A brown bear inhabits an enclosure at the sanctuary's base, linked to the ancient tale of Saint Romedius taming a wild animal. This living creature brings the medieval legend into the present day and makes the old story tangible for visitors.
