Sovana

Sovana is a medieval village perched on a tuff ridge in the province of Grosseto in Tuscany. The settlement sits amid dense forests alongside scattered Etruscan archaeological remains that dot the surrounding landscape.

The settlement was founded in ancient times and became a significant administrative center during the medieval period with a fortress and cathedral. The village layout today still reflects those early power structures, with the church and old palace as central points.

During restoration work at San Mamiliano Church, workers uncovered hundreds of ancient gold coins from the early Christian period. The discovery reveals the church was an important religious destination where people left their valuables.
