Johanneskofel

Johanneskofel is a mountain summit in Ritten standing at about 660 meters, crowned by the ruins of a medieval castle at its peak. The slopes are steep and rocky, covered with natural plant growth.

Medieval fortifications were built on the summit to serve as a strategic defensive position controlling the surrounding region. Today only ruins remain, standing as evidence of this important chapter.

The mountain carries two names - Johanneskofel in German and Punta San Giovanni in Italian - reflecting how different communities in South Tyrol have long inhabited and used this peak. The bilingual approach shows the region's shared cultural roots.

Several marked hiking trails lead from the surrounding area to the summit, with clear signs marking the different routes available. The paths vary in difficulty, so choose one suited to your fitness level.

This location brings together natural rock formations with archaeological remains, giving visitors a view of both geology and human history in one place. The ruins still show traces of medieval building techniques integrated into the steep rocky terrain.
