San Giorgio al Palazzo Church

San Giorgio al Palazzo Church, Church building in Milan, Italy

San Giorgio al Palazzo is a church in Milan with a marble facade featuring three Renaissance portals and a triangular pediment topped with bronze statues of Saint George and two angels. The building combines Italian Baroque and Neoclassical elements that developed through renovations across multiple centuries.

The church was built on the ruins of a Roman imperial palace and was originally founded by Bishop San Natale in 740. In the nineteenth century, major modifications were made including the addition of a square bell tower and a Neoclassical dome.

Over centuries, the church served as a major gathering place for worship and displays artworks from different periods inside its walls. Visitors today can still see frescoes and paintings created by renowned Renaissance artists that reflect the artistic life of Milan.

The church is located in central Milan and is easily accessible on foot, especially when exploring near the historic old town area. It is advisable to visit earlier in the day when the interior is better lit and the artworks on the walls are more clearly visible.

The Chapel of the Passion holds frescoes by Bernardino Luini from 1516, a work more than 500 years old that shows the artistic heritage of the city. An altarpiece by Gaudenzio Ferrari from 1530 completes this collection and reveals how different artist generations collaborated during this period.
